The Literary Department of Black Swan State Theatre Company sources and reads new plays from the world, explores classics that reverberate today and commissions new works by playwrights from around the Country.

We are passionate about supporting the development of scripts that are relevant to our times, that excite our imaginations and that we believe will resonate strongly with our community.

We actively encourage playwrights from diverse cultural backgrounds.

We acknowledge that in Perth our new works are developed on Whadjuk boodja, where stories have been told for tens of thousands of years.

Black Swan State Theatre Company – storytelling is at our heart.

  • Commissioned Plays

We commission new plays and adaptations in line with our programming aspirations.

Script development support is offered throughout the commissioned period. This can sometimes extend over a number of years. We know that the nurturing needs of new works are as individual as each project.

  • Unsolicited Scripts

We do not accept unsolicited scripts at Black Swan State Theatre Company.

If you have a script you think might be right for our programming, please ask your agent to contact us about it.

Despite being a small team, our Artistic Department is very active in regard to seeing produced works and we discuss what we have seen at our weekly Artistic Meetings. This is one way we get to know about playwrights. If you don’t have an agent but would like us to know about your work, please consider inviting us along to any production of a show you have written via

  • Playwriting Group

Black Swan State Theatre Company has an Associated Playwrights group, made up of some of the local playwrights actively producing current works. This group meets with the Literary Director every two months, to discuss a contemporary text, to exchange thoughts on personal practise and to discuss current issues. Membership of the group is by invitation.

Unsung Heroes, a commission for season 2020, was developed by the following writers from this group: Gita Bezard, Barbara Hostalek, Chris Isaacs, Will O’Mahony, Hellie Turner and Mararo Wangai.

Current writing group members are Tyler Jacobs Jones, Barbara Hostalek, Scott McArdle, Liz Newell and Mararo Wangai.

  • Established Playwrights

Our Literary Director is always delighted for you to touch base and say hello, and for your agent to send through any script that, having considered our programming, you both believe might be right for us, right now.

  • Emerging Playwrights

Black Swan has a long and proud history of supporting emerging writers. We have provided various programs for new and emerging playwrights, over many years.

In 2020, we began a new program. Supported by the Malcolm Robertson Foundation, we now offer a targeted opportunity, a pathway for an established comedienne to develop her playwriting skills. Our first playwright in the Funny Girl Program is Andrea Gibbs.
