Part live art experience, part game,
part work out.
FITTER. FASTER. BETTER. is a boot camp performance like no other, where your personal trainer isn't a gym junkie with an Instagram obsession, but rather, an 8 to 10 year-old. It challenges the contemporary commodification of fitness offering an opportunity to reflect on childhood and movement. Reclaiming play as audience participants work out, in and around an open space within the school.
Fitter, Faster Better. has two distinct participatory components. The first component is four half day workshops delivered as a school incursion. The workshops are instructed by two Black Swan theatre artists and attended by up to 30 students from years 3/4. Over the four days, the artists’ work with the students on craft activities, drama and dance choreography and discuss how students can use their school spaces in a new way. The second component, on the fifth day, are two 45-minute boot camps in an open space in the school, close to playground equipment. The boot camps are instructed by the above-mentioned students for up to 30 adults that have registered.
Originally devised by Black Swan’s Artistic Director Clare Watson for St Martins Youth Arts Centre, FITTER. FASTER. BETTER. is a unique experiential, intergenerational performance event where our ideas about the body in motion are refocused through the eyes of a child.
I had the pleasure of being a participant in the Black Swan State Theatre Company's programme FITTER. FASTER. BETTER. The whole experience was fun, energetic and produced a lot of laughter from trainers, participants and audience. My personal trainer got great amusement out of working me double time. It was a thoroughly enjoyable fitness session and I would highly recommend this programme to promote healthy lifestyles in children. My class loved FITTER. FASTER. BETTER. The students enjoyed trying new activities and learning new games. The program helped the students develop confidence and leadership skills while working together as a team. I loved the way FITTER. FASTER. BETTER. encouraged the students to take ownership over their own physical fitness and empowered them to teach their games and activities to others. Even my less confident students were chatting away with their partners and training someone new by the end of the week! Thank you so much to the team at Black Swan for a wonderful week of learning, fitness and the Arts! Teacher, Sarah Shiminski, Westminister Primary School.
