Last Friday’s announcement of four-year arts investment from the Australia Council for the Arts delivered much-needed support for arts organisations across Australia. However, it also dealt a punishing blow for many enormously creative and highly valued organisations who will not receive the security and certainty that this investment provides. These are companies playing a vital role in connecting our communities and defining our national cultural identity. They are instrumental in nurturing new ideas and emerging talent that feed the creativity we all enjoy. Their growth is growth for all of us, their loss is a loss for all of us.
We extend our genuine congratulations to those companies who secured multi-year investment for the first time, and to those who renewed their ongoing support.
People turn to the arts for inspiration, hope and joy, particularly in this extraordinary time of social isolation. When we all emerge from the COVID-19 crisis our communities will need rebuilding and we will need to do this together. We will need to tell stories of this time, we will need to reimagine the world into which we emerge and the Arts will be essential in this process, for all of us and by all of us.
